When a teen will not talk: family systems in Clear Lake

Catherine Stoll wrote a Google review about her teen son. She noticed unusual behavior at the start of a school year. He would come home smelling like marijuana. He refused to talk to her about his problems. She set an appointment. After a few sessions she could have a conversation with him again. She said restoring that relationship brought her joy.

Who Noel sees

He welcomes adults, couples, teens, and families. LGBTQ friendly. Children as young as 10, and sometimes 8 if the child can express feelings, through elders 65 and older. Individual counseling, couples counseling, and family therapy are all listed. Telehealth is offered.

Psychology Today lists family conflict, child, parenting, school issues, peer relationships, and behavioral issues among his work. The incumbent FAQ list includes Impulse Control Disorder, Mood Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, and substance-related concerns. Those are lists. They are not your child’s chart.

Family systems / system theory is one of the modalities he integrates. So are CBT, EMDR, solution-focused work, and a client-centered approach. He spent twenty years as an educational consultant helping schools respond to substance use disorder and trained more than 30,000 teachers from more than 600 communities. That history is why a school-year problem does not sound foreign in this office.

The book on the shelf

In 2010 he published Stop in the Name of Love, written for parents, educators, and counselors who conduct behavioral interventions. It is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Reading it is not the same as booking a family hour. It is a way to hear how he writes about behavior before you sit in the room.

He has also published six articles in professional trade publications, including Adolescent Counselor, and authored three training curricula used in K-12 schools. National recognition is listed for 1997 and 2002. Those are About-page facts. They are not a school contract.

How a parent starts

If the teen’s piece is trauma, ask about EMDR. If the marriage is the system the teen is living inside, ask about couples. If early recovery is already in the house, ask about the group process and the Twelve-Step support he already names. Therapy is not recovery. A family hour does not replace a meeting.
